Na’aseh V’nishmah – We will do and we will hear.

Our Israelite ancestors said these words when we first received the Torah.  We have named our core justice group at Emanuel after this famous phrase to show our commitment to action FIRST in the face of need.  Our first response must be action and we will be nimble to respond to changing needs.  This year, Na’aseh V’nishmah will focus our efforts on the world’s largest refugee crisis since the Holocaust.  If you would like to learn more on how to get involved, volunteer, and support our work, please contact congregant Pete Siegel at petermsiegel@gmail.com.

Below are some of the organizations we are partnering with to help realize this vision.

Tiyya – (tiyya.org) This Orange County-based organization helps resettling refugee families overcome obstacles to become self-sufficient.  Our High Holiday diaper drive will benefit local families helped by Tiyya and we will have multiple volunteer opportunities throughout the year with them.  Contact petermsiegel@gmail.com to learn more about how you can help and what upcoming opportunities there are for volunteering

Jewish World Watch-- (JWW.org) Jewish World Watch is a hands-on leader in the fight against genocide and mass atrocities, engaging individuals and communities to take local actions that produce powerful global results.  This year – we expand our efforts beyond refugee camps in Africa to provide medical supplies to the remaining hospitals in Syria.  Join us this spring in our annual Walk to End Genocide.  Email Judy Kandel at jkandel@Exchange.fullerton.edu.

The MAJOR Fund – Muslim and Jewish Organized Relief (https://www.calfund.org/major-fund/) Founded out of a partnership between Temple Emanuel and a local Mosque, this local collaboration builds community around supporting global humanitarian projects in the critical areas of clean water, education, and healthcare.  Build relationships across faith lines while alleviating poverty and suffering.  Email Diane Vanette at diane.vanette@mac.com to learn about the current focus.

Our Continuing Projects

In addition to our focus on refugees, Temple Emanuel continues to be a proud member of One LA  -- working with partners across Los Angeles County to build strong relationships and equip our members with leadership skills.  We are also continuing our partnership with Imagine LA to help local families transition out of homelessness.  We are looking for 1-2 additional people in order to start working with our fourth family.  If you have skills in budgeting, working with children, or are just a people-person who wants to help, contact Debra Carnow at debracarnow@gmail.com.
