With Us

Jewish Community School of Los Angeles strives to teach students the skills and knowledge they need to develop into engaged, excited, and active Jewish adults.

In our unique school, students explore Judaism, values and tradition as it relates to the real world and issues about which they care.

Our students learn Hebrew Through Movement because by connecting language with motion, foreign language acquisition becomes easier to master.

Project Based.

Through thoughtful, personalized instruction, students explore the questions they care about through year long projects and learn how to look at the world through a Jewish lens.

Our Philosophy

Jewish.

Jewish values, Hebrew prayers, holidays – we do it all. Our students don’t only learn about our tradition, they learn how to apply it to their lives today.

Life Skills.

Through collaboration and team-building activities, students build connections with their classmates, gain self confidence, develop critical thinking, and hone the 21st century skills they care about.

The focus of our Religious School is to create successful Jewish adults. We prepare our students for the world by teaching them to cultivate compassion, empathy, and practical skills through project based learning paired with interdisciplinary STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) education. Our Genesis program takes STEAM learning to new heights by cultivating  students’ skill sets  performing  arts and the sciences within a Jewish context. All our religious school programs teach our students how to weave their Jewish identity into their 21st-century lives to discover a life full of meaning.

We have built a nationally-celebrated partnership with the Religious Action Center (RAC). Each year, teens select an issue that engages their intellect and passion, learn from experts in the field, lobby, and engage in non-profit advocacy and philanthropy. The students take a 4-day trip to Washington, D.C. to meet and learn with over two thousand teens from across the country, through the RAC’s L’Taken Social Justice seminar.

Meaningful
Jewish
Moments

We strive to create a B’nai Mitzvah environment that is collaborative, where every family understands the child’s responsibilities and privileges within the context of our community. Our staff and community are here to offer support, guidance, clarification, and encouragement throughout your family’s journey. Our hope is that your entire family will find great meaning in preparing for this once-in-a-lifetime moment.

The B’nai Mitzvah Experience

At Temple Emanuel, we want to help ensure that our Bar/Bat Mitzvahs are meaningful and memorable We strive to create a collaborative environment in becoming a Bar/Bat Mitzvah, in which every family will understand the child’s responsibilities and privileges within the context of our community

Each Bar/Bat Mitzvah student will have a Torah, Avodah, and Gemilut Hasadim Project (also known as the Mitzvah Project), and we will match your child with a Madrich Ruchani, a Spiritual Mentor. This mentor will help guide the student throughout the project, which includes helping him/her understand his/her Torah portion, writing a D’var Torah (Bar/Bat Mitzvah speech), discussing thoughts and feelings about prayer and God, monitoring attendance at services, and overseeing fulfillment of gemilut hasadim. It is our belief that your child’s relationship with his/her mentor will help him/her understand the true significance of this important ceremony. Temple Emanuel’s staff and community are here to offer support, guidance, clarification, and encouragement throughout your family’s journey.

We are eager to help answer any questions and to provide valuable information and assistance along the way. Our hope is that your entire family will find great meaning in preparing for this once-in-a-lifetime moment. We look forward to seeing you at the synagogue, and contributing to all the beauty and significance of this milestone in your family’s life.
